Chapter Eighteen

TO DO

Pick up iced buns

Fill in expenses sheet

Arriving to work on a Monday morning has never felt so good, I finally know what it feels like to be on cloud nine and I can’t stop smiling. The evening got even better once dinner arrived, and Caspar enjoyed the dessert immensely. Let’s just say that the sexy underwear I wore especially, it got an outing. I still can’t believe Caspar said the L word. He likes me! Me! Every time I replay the moment my face heats up, I can see him standing in front of me, his adoring eyes, the sound of his voice. I’m dying to see Dev and tell him all about it.

But when I arrive at the office, there’s not a soul in sight. There’s no Dev to greet me, like he usually does. There’s a sea of empty chairs, and unusually, even the phones are silent. It feels like I’ve just stumbled upon the abandoned Marie Celeste and I don’t like it, not one little bit. Where’s the sound of my colleagues chattering and laughing, where’s the sound of tapping keys? Something must have happened. Something’s wrong. My mind goes into overdrive, what if there’s been a siege, what if my colleagues have been taken hostage? My heart beats faster as I approach my desk, worried about what I might find. Stuck to my computer screen is a fluorescent pink post-it note.

Olivia come into the conference room ASAP! Dev x

Is this note in code, do they need me to call the police? Am I the only person who can save everyone? And more to the point, can I handle this level of responsibility? Once again my mind is sent into overdrive. I shake my head; this does sound far-fetched. But why else would the place be empty? Ooh, I know! Russell told me once about what the first company he worked for did, and it was just like this. The company need to ensure everyone hears the news that they have to announce and the only thing I can think of is that the company’s folding and we’re all being made redundant. Oh no! Although I must admit, that does sound more likely than the hostage scenario. I march determinedly down the corridor, but as soon as I near the room I hear barking and not just of one dog but of what sounds like a million dogs on the other side of the door. And now my heart’s pounding. Why the hell do we have a conference room full of dogs. My palms are sweaty, and my breathing becomes quick and shallow. I need to get away from here and fast. I turn on my kitten heel and start walking as fast as I can back to my desk but behind me, I hear the door swing open.

‘Oscar, stay.’ And in a more commanding voice, this instruction is repeated. ‘Oscar STAY.’ Oscar however is having none of it, he’s not listening or being at all obedient and cooperative.
